Tuesday was a record-breaking day for foreclosures in Santa Cruz County. The fate of about three dozen properties scheduled for foreclosure sales was announced on the steps of the county building by Liese Varenkamp, who handles auction sales for lenders.

Sheriff deed auctions, a process in which a property in foreclosure is sold to the highest bidder, fell 10 percent in August in Ingham County. There were 153 properties sold at auction last month, down from 170 a year earlier, according to figures from the Ingham County treasurer's office.
